A facilities management professional is responsible for the overall management and operation of a facility or group of facilities. This can include a wide range of responsibilities, such as overseeing maintenance and repair of the facility, managing budgets and resources, project management, sustainability, and ensuring compliance with regulations and industry standards.

Some specific responsibilities of a facilities director may include the following:

  • Developing and implementing facility management policies and procedures
  • Coordinating the maintenance, repair, and renovation of the facility
  • Planning and overseeing the construction of new facilities or renovation of existing facilities
  • Managing and overseeing the work of various teams, such as custodial, maintenance, security, and landscaping
  • Monitoring and maintaining the facility's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Managing the budget for the facility, including forecasting, budgeting, and financial reporting
  • Overseeing the procurement of materials, equipment, and services
  • Ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Managing relationships with vendors and contractors
  • Providing leadership and direction to the facilities management team

To be successful in this role, a facilities director should have strong leadership, management, and organizational skills, as well as knowledge of building maintenance and construction, budgeting, and regulatory compliance. They should also be able to work well with a wide range of stakeholders, including employees, vendors, contractors, and government officials.
